First steps!

'The ladder of success is as short as you make it' (anon)

Did I mention that Jessica took her first steps on Monday night?! Very exciting in our little world. She's been practising little baby steps since then but crawling is still definitely the quickest way to get around!

I have discovered that the local upholsterer in North Berwick, Castle Cottage Upholstery sells bolt ends as remnants. So I was down there at top speed today and picked up a lovely piece of fabric which I have fashioned into a cover for my sewing machine. I have been coping with the very dilapidated cover that my machine came with years ago:

And made a new one during Jessica's nap this afternoon, et voila! Here it is, just needs finishing around the opening for the handle but I'm pretty pleased with it.

How can you get excited about a rotary cutter? But I AM!!!! I've only ever used scissors to cut fabric but I ordered a rotary cutter the other day and it arrived a couple of days ago so this was the first chance to use it. It's amazing, it cuts as if through warm butter and will revolutionise my cutting of fabric. But it is very sharp, to be done when Jessica is not around with her little exploring fingers......

Have a lovely weekend, we're off to the local Air Show at East Fortune's National Museum of Flight. The Red Arrows went over our house today as a practice flight. What a sight, and what a noise, it was quite something.

The sun has got his hat on, hip hip hip hooray!

'No man or woman is worth your tears and the one who is, won't make you cry' (source unknown)

The sun has arrived for one day only! Jessica and I have been making the most of it with our sun dresses and being outside all day. Funnily enough, both our dresses are green Boden ones. I often unwittingly dress Jessica in a similar outfit to mine. I'm wearing mine because it's sunny and I can finally fit into it as I'm almost back to pre-pregnancy weight. Jessica is in hers as her godmother gave it to her for her birthday on Friday.

During Jessica's nap, I finished my napkins ready to set up on my new Etsy shop. This was my studio for the day......

If only this could be my studio every day, it's what I had planned for the summer but I've been at the kitchen table all summer so far! We look forward to an Indian summer maybe.....?

I also made up a pattern for making a new cover for my sewing machine. I'm going to measure up for my other projects tomorrow so that I can go and buy all the fabric from a local fabric shop and then next week I can get sewing properly!!! How exciting. I've been thinking up all kinds of projects that need to be done around the house and just been looking for some time to do them. First job though is to get the fabric.....

Off to enjoy the sun, rain is forecast for tomorrow.

and the holiday is over.....

Hello! We've had a lovely holiday, very busy but lots of lovely memories.

Most importantly, my little girl has turned one! She is no longer a baby. The rain stayed away on Friday so we celebrated with a lazy barbecue and the grandparents. I baked and baked on Thursday and made her birthday cake, here it is!! Lots of chocolate involved, my husband wasn't surprised!

I only managed to do one craft project making bean bags of different textures. Jessica loves rummaging in my kitchen cupboard with the dried stores such as lentils etc so I thought I would make bean bags for her which would save my cupboards too! I made four of different textures. The silk one and the oilcloth one seem to be her favourites. Case in point, here's her little hand snatching the oil cloth one as I was taking the photo!

Another exciting development is that we changed one of the bedrooms next to the kitchen into a playroom. She loves it! A lot of her toys are in there and she scampers in and can spend ages in there which is lovely. We got some Very Hungry Caterpillar stickers so those will be put on the walls at the weekend to make it more fun for her. I'm going to try to source a lampshade too.

Although its not so nice to be off holiday time, it's nice to be back and blogging again. See you soon.

We're on holiday tonight, woo hoo!

Holidays are about experiences and people, and tuning into what you feel like doing at that moment. Enjoy not having to look at a watch. (Evelyn Glennie)

So, really exciting that we have a full week and two weekends together as a family! We always celebrate by having a sushi meal. My husband collects all the maki rolls and sashimi from Sushiya on Dalry Road in Edinburgh and then drives home to North Berwick where the chilled white wine is waiting to accompany the yummy food we're about to it. There's just time to enjoy it before Jessica's bath time. Just our little holiday ritual but it certainly says HOLIDAY to us!!!

We will be at home as it's Jessica's first birthday next Friday so we're just going to relax into being at home, enjoying each other's company and most certainly avoiding the watch at all costs! Doubt the sun is going to appear but I want to settle into sewing this week if it's not great weather. I'll either save up those projects to show you or post as I go along but no promises - not watching the clock.

See you a week on Monday!!

It's Wednesday, almost the holidays!

'Marriage can be successful, if you fall in love many times - with the same person' (anon)

I haven't done too much today apart from sitting in a doctor's waiting room for what seemed like most of the morning! What do you do with an almost one year old when you haven't got much on you to amuse her as you thought you were going to be there for ten minutes?! You let her amuse all the old ladies who are also waiting - I'm very lucky to have such a smiley, beautiful baby.

So in the absence of anything much happening, I thought I would pick a quote I liked. This one is for my lovely hubby who puts up with my idiosyncrasies.

We're on our holidays next week, hurray! We're staying at home as it's Jessica's first birthday and so there will be grandparents visiting and birthday barbecues. I did spend part of my morning looking for ideas for her birthday cake - I do know that it's going to involve chocolate!!! And more chocolate.....! Sort of along the lines of this shape but without the photographs, made of chocolate, chocolate fingers around the edge and scattered with sugar flowers on top...... Let's see how I get on with that next week!

Great match, Andy!

'Expectations lead to disappointments'

Andy Murray, you are still a hero in our eyes. You played brilliantly and very gracious in defeat (photograph from The Telegraph).

We were glued to the television yesterday, what a great match. There is always next year but the expectations will be even higher...... Let's hope the disappointments won't be greater.

On a grey Saturday afternoon, I finally patched Jessica's jeans. They went from being obsolete through wear and tear:

To this, brand new again (almost!) and ready to be worn through again. She's almost walking though so hopefully no more knee wearing through....

So when is the sun going to appear?!

'you can tell a lot about a person by the way they handle these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage and tangled Christmas tree lights' (source unknown)

I've just had to switch the lights on at 3.30 on a July afternoon!!!! It's ridiculous. Can we have the sun back?! My sunglasses have dust on them....

I don't know if you can see the dust on this photo but it's there! The sun came out briefly for a couple of hours yesterday but I had my prescription glasses on. The bliss of feeling heat in the air was lovely. We're on holiday at home in a couple of weeks so as long as the weather is nice then I don't mind too much!

In the meantime, I'm handling a rainy day (or lots of them) by getting lots of admin jobs done so that next week I can finish my napkin sets ready to launch on Etsy.

Quite exciting though, my little lavender plug plants arrived in the post yesterday so I made the most of the sun to pot them on so went from them all squashed up in their plugs to lots of space in their own pots, aaah!

Have a good weekend!

Remembering......

'Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction' (can't remember source).

Sadly nine years ago my lovely little brother was killed. He was shot in Iraq, he was meant to be covering post war Iraq and had been there for twelve days. His name was Richard Wild. His death signalled the start of the guerilla warfare. Reason for death is unknown, it was a contract killing as he was shot at close range. Belief is that he had maybe gone 'off message' with a story at he was investigating.

Always remembering the good times, Richard......

And we are going to be on TV!

'When the world wearied and society ceases to satisfy, there is always the garden' Anon

I'm a comparatively new gardener having bought a house with a garden two and a half years ago. I grew up with my parents loving and tending their two acre garden and so have been itching to do the same - only my garden is much smaller!

There is a fantastic gardening programme in Scotland called Beechgrove Garden and they have a section called Problem Corner. Back in the dark days of November last year, I applied for it to see if they would fix a section of the garden where I don't know where to start. I have a dry shady section under a large cherry plum tree and any ideas would be gratefully received!

To my surprise, we were selected and we looked forward eagerly to 28th June when it would be lovely and sunny and we could enjoy the filming. The day grew closer and closer and I grew more and more anxious about the start of the garden so spent my spare time getting it up to scratch -apart from the Problem Corner of course!

These are the before pictures:

And after six hours of filming, lots of rain and a barbecue, we ended up with this:

Pretty cool! Just need to keep it looking good, oooo the pressure! It's on BBC2 Scotland at 7.30pm on Thursday 12th July. Maybe see you there.

Welcome

Now that I'm Mum of a one year old daughter, Jessica, a two year old high maintenance black Labrador, Pippin, and wife to my blond blue eyed husband, I have time at home to do what I really want to do. Which is to sew......

My mother brought me up to use my hands whether it be to knit or sew or anything else. The knitting has gone into decline, I have taught myself to upholster furniture but sewing has remained the skill which has rumbled along in the background waiting to be fully rediscovered. My home is now curtained and cushioned and I now want to expand, possibly to sell home crafted goods. My first venture will be napkins and hopefully they will be shortly be going live on Etsy.

I look forward to sharing the journey with you.
